My late dog Suzy spent much of her life chasing after and trying to catch squirrels. She never was successful, but one day she did catch a black and white one. While she held it in her mouth, the skunk twisted around and let go a cloud of gooey spray – point blank in her face.

Below is the best recipe that we are aware of for de-skunking a dog. It works well, but the smell will linger for quite some time, especially after each of the next few baths you give your dog.

De-Skunking Recipe

  • 1 Quart of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide
  • 1 Cup Baking Soda
  • 1 teaspoon of a gentle liquid soap like Dawn Dish Soap

Mix these ingredients together in a container. Wash your pet with this thoroughly making sure to pay special attention to the area sprayed by the skunk. Avoid contact with the eyes. Rinse thoroughly with water.
